The four foundation schools within the Thames Foundation School Scheme (TFSS) have developed under the auspices of the London, Eastern and KSS Deaneries to provide programmes of foundation training in a wide geographical area. The foundation schools are managed by the London and KSS Deaneries.

Foundation Programme training comprises two separate years (F1 and F2) aimed at delivering an integrated educational programme with defined outcomes. F1 is currently designed to lead to full registration with the general medical council. F2 will deliver a nationally agreed curriculum, which will prepare foundation doctors for a career in a wide range of clinical settings and specialties.

Academic Foundation Programmes - These two year programmes offer a unique training opportunity for those interested in a career in academic medicine. The programmes will give medical school graduates the ability to both attain the training required of them as part of their foundation programme, as well as receiving a comprehensive introduction to academic medicine. Details of the application process for programmes commencing in August 2009 are available on the UKFPO.

Provisional Registration

All F1s must have obtained provisional registration with the general medical council prior to taking up employment and must comply in a timely manner with trust requirements, including criminal records bureau checks, occupational health clearance and any other checks deemed necessary by the Trust. Your medical school will issue advice on the arrangements for obtaining provisional registration.

Full Registration

The learning objectives for Year 1 are set by the general medical council and at the completion of the F1 year doctors holding provisional registration need to apply to the GMC for full registration. Details of the process for obtaining full registration will be issued by your foundation school manager.

F2 Programmes

Details of the F1-F2 allocation process for doctors within the Thames foundation scheme are posted on each Thames foundation scheme site.
Details of any unfilled F2 August 2009 programmes will not be known until mid April 2010. It is expected that any vacancies will be advertised in the medical press or NHS Careers

Careers

The Deanery hosts its own careers pages with useful information on specialty choices. It has been designed to help doctors understand and consider training options by providing as much up-to-date information as possible. It can help you think about different career choices by enhancing your understanding of the hospital specialties and of general practice.

For each specialty we will provide:

• a brief description,
• aspects which make it attractive as a career option
• challenges facing those considering entering the specialty
• the future of the specialty
• a trainee's view of the specialty
• entry criteria for the specialty
• graph showing projected numbers of trainees reaching CCST
• a sample person specification for each specialty

Foundation Doctor E-Handbook

The Foundation Doctor E-Handbook has been created as a one stop guide for foundation doctors within the Thames foundation school scheme. FDs in STFS should also refer to the STFS handbook.

The foundation doctor reps on the TFSB, members of the foundation doctor feedback group, FS managers and Trust PG centre managers have all helped in the production of this A-Z reference.
