Support for International Medical Graduates and EEA doctors

International Medical Students: Learner Support Resources Library for GP Educators

There is recognition that international medical graduates (IMGs) and EEA graduates may have specific learning needs when translating their experience to working in the UK and becoming a GP trainee. These learning needs may be focused around;

  • Linguistic needs
  • Sociolinguistic cues
  • Cultural competence
  • Communication and Consulting Skills
  • Learning & teaching
  • Professionalism

It is appropriate to work early in GP training on these issues

The RCGP shares the overall examination results for MRCGP which shows the specific problems related to the AKT and CSA exams for IMGs and EU trained doctors (MRCGP Statistics 2010: Third Report January-‐May 2010 on the results of the MRCGP AKT and CSA Assessments). The support is offered through the network of local educationalists. In the first instance you should contact your educational supervisor or programme director, who may well liaise with your Patch Associate Director for further advice.
