ACCS - Intensive Care Medicine

Curriculum

There is currently no run-through training programme in intensive care medicine (ICM). Trainees wishing to specialise in intensive care must do so as part of a joint programme with their parent speciality known as the ‘Dual CCT’. As well as the competencies for the ACCS training programme, trainees wishing to compete for a Dual CCT need to complete the additional complementary competency documents from the curriculum for a CCT in intensive care medicine produced by the Intercollegiate Board of Intensive Care Medicine (IBTICM).
See The curriculum for the CCT in intensive care: Parts 1, 2, 3 and 5

The complementary speciality competencies (in Part 3) must be completed during the relevant modules of ACCS in order to apply.

The RCoA and ITBICM have given the following advice:
‘Trainees who aspire to a consultant post with a substantial or whole time commitment in ICM should, as early as possible in their training (and in any event before starting their second 3 months of intermediate ICM training) should liaise with their local educational supervisor and their regional advisor in ICM to clarify the acceptability of their proposed ICM training programme. Training in ICM at this level will be guided by the IBTICM’s syllabus. If the training conforms in all respects to the requirements of the Board (including the length of training blocks) it may be recognised towards a dual CCT in Anaesthesia and ICM, or towards Board-recognised “Intermediate” or “Advanced” Training Certification.’
For more information on this see the ITBICM website or speak to the regional advisor for intensive care medicine.

Assessments

During the intensive care medicine module each trainee must complete both the 3-month preliminary competencies and part of the core competencies. These include assessment of competence as well as case summaries and are in addition to the workplace assessments (CbDs / DOPs etc) needed for the ACCS intensive care module. Currently there are no specific WBA forms for ICM, the use of anaesthetic DOPs/Mini-Cex etc forms is acceptable during the ICM placement.
