The SpR Grade

What is the SpR Grade?

The Specialist Registrar (SpR) grade was introduced in 1996, replacing the Senior Registrar and Registrar grades. The aim of the Specialist Registrar grade is to provide a structured training programme leading to the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST). Whilst in the Specialist Registrar grade trainees will be given training opportunities which, with regular assessments, will lead to the completion of the syllabus.

Training Opportunities

Within the SpR grade, there are two training pathways - Type 1 Training which leads to the award of a CCST, and Type 2 Training which provides overseas doctors with the opportunity to pursue specific educational objectives. There are also occasions where the SpR may be offered a Locum post. The SpR could also have the opportunity for Out of Programme Experience and Research.
