Trainee Annual Reviews
This page provides general guidance and information on annual reviews for trainees on training programmes managed by the London Deanery. It is not intended to be a substitute for College materials on assessment or E Portfolios. Trainees are encouraged to make use of specialty specific resources to gain a full picture of the assessment and review framework for their specialty. These are accessible via the relevant School pages on Synapse.
How do Annual Reviews affect me?
As a trainee, your progress must be reviewed at least annually by the Deanery, which is the body responsible for managing your training. This applies to you whether you are a Core Trainee, LAT or hold a National Training Number. Annual reviews are necessary to maintain patient safety and ensure that you are provided with appropriate support for your development as a doctor.
RITAs
If you started in training before 1st August 2007, it is likely that you will be covered by the Record of In Training Assessment (RITA) process. Full details on the RITA process can be found in the publication 'A Guide to Specialist Registrar Training" (The Orange Book).
ARCPs
If you are a Specialty Registrar who started on or after 1st August 2007, then you will be covered by the Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP). Full details on the ARCP can be found in the publication 'A Guide to Postgraduate Specialty Training in the UK' (The Gold Guide).
Further information
The slide pack in the right hand panel provides an introduction to these annual review processes for new trainees, and clarification of some key concepts for existing trainees. These are intended to be supportive processes for all trainees. By helping you to understand how they work, it is hoped that you will be able to get the best out of your annual reviews.
The review and appeal procedure rules are also available for download from the right hand panel.
