Support for doctors

This page provides information about four services working together to meet the health needs of doctors and dentists in London. Each is either part of the NHS or funded by the professional body, so provided free of charge to those who access care.

MedNet service

MedNet is a confidential self-referral service for doctors and dentists in need of emotional support, in career difficulties, or having relationship problems at work.

MedNet is staffed by medical consultants and interventions are individually tailored in the context of a supportive relationship. Access to other experts is available via this route.

The service is based at the Tavistock Centre (Camden) and at the Maudsley Hospital (Camberwell) and is funded by the London Deanery.

Practitioner Health Programme (PHP)

The PHP is a new and confidential service for doctors and dentists living or working in London.

Practitioners with concerns about their physical or mental health or addiction can contact the service for advice, consultation and treatment. Health care organisations may seek advice or make referrals. Colleagues, family and friends of practitioners with health concerns may also contact the service for advice.

The service is based in Vauxhall and provided by a highly qualified and experienced multi-professional primary care team. They refer on to secondary care mental health and addiction services.

BMA Counselling and Doctors 4 Doctors

This 24/7, 365 days a year national service offers doctors an opportunity either to talk in confidence over the telephone to a trained counsellor or be given details of a doctor advisor to call directly.

The service works with doctors to help them gain insight into their problems, supporting and helping them to move on by adopting a holistic approach to their situation.

The service is associated with the PHP to facilitate onward specialist referrals where appropriate.

BDA Dentists Health Support Scheme

A 24 hour confidential help-line for dentists with alcohol addiction problems who are practising in the UK.

The co-ordinator of the Dentists Health Support Programme arranges treatment, monitors the progress of treatment and acts as a support for those accessing the programme.
