Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) is a fantastic specialty in which you are involved in the lifelong care of women and the safe delivery of their babies. It’s quite a diverse specialty which allows doctors to maintain an interest in and develop both medical and surgical skills. The possible career paths after training are many with some practicing Obstetrics or Gynaecology in isolation or combination. Subspecialisation, research and medical education are also possible career routes. It is extremely rewarding with incredible job satisfaction.

I had no real interest in O&G until my 4th year reproductive and sexual health block at medical school. Before that I was considering a career in radiology or oncology.  After a few weeks on my O&G firm I was hooked. It was exciting and I gained an understanding of the complexity of care required in improving patient outcomes and experience. I found it both fascinating and challenging. During my peripheral attachment at a District General Hospital I could be found on the labour ward most nights shadowing the doctors and midwives. I delivered my first baby on one of those nights, an experience that I can only describe as amazing. The mother named the baby after me and I knew then that O&G was the career for me.

Highlights

  • The job is hugely rewarding
  • Most patients are grateful for your efforts
  • An exciting specialty, especially on the labour ward and in theatre
  • Fantastic role models in Consultants and more senior trainees.

Challenges

  • Ethical and moral discussions occur frequently and some may find this challenging
  • Litigation is increasing as in all areas of medicine
  • Complications can occur, even with the best care
  • High work intensity

If you are dedicated, a sharp thinker, enjoy both medicine and surgery, have the ability to work with many people from a variety of backgrounds and want a career that is very hands on, O&G is one of the best choices to consider.
