General Practice
GP training can be completed on a part-time basis. A mixture of full-time and part-time posts is also acceptable. There are, however, specific requirements, which have to be met in order to comply with Parliamentary Regulations currently in force.
Part-time training must not be less than 50% of whole time. Both the hospital component and the general practice component of the three years' programme must include a period of full-time employment lasting a week.
If a doctor training flexibly for general practice works 50% of whole time, he/she will spend 48 months in the hospital component and 24 months in the general practice component.
Part-time training can be organised in consultation with the Deans of Postgraduate General Practice Education, listed in Section 1 of this website, to ensure that it complies with the regulatory requirements.
Further information on part time training can be obtained from the Joint Committee on Postgraduate Training for General Practice, 1st Floor, 19 Buckingham Street, London, WC2N 6EF.
