Cardiology introduction

Cardiology encompasses all aspects of the care of patients with heart disease. The specialty seeks to meet the need for comprehensive risk assessment and risk modification - involving medical treatment of symptoms and investigation of symptoms to define risk - and the need for treatment of symptoms and disease - by drugs, non-surgical intervention or surgery as appropriate. It also deals with Cardiac rehabilitation. Finally, the specialty is involved in the palliation of conditions which are not at the present time amenable to cure.

Paediatric Cardiologists deal with heart disease in babies and children up to adolescence, and collaborate with adult cardiologists in dealing with congenital heart disease in adolescent and grown up patients.

Interview process

Document checking: Documents required for interview

Length of interview: 30 - 60 minutes - to be confirmed

Interview structure: Interviews will consist of an interview panel of three stations, at which criteria-based questions will be asked relating to audit, portfolio and clinical knowledge. One of the stations will include a clinical scenario.

Preference form: The preference form will be made available at the interviews.

Pay scales           

All trainees should be paid monthly at the rates set out in the national terms and conditions of service for hospital medical and dental staff and doctors in public health medicine and the community health service (England and Wales), “the TCS”, as amended from time to time. The payscales are reviewed annually. Part-time posts will be paid pro-rata.
